Researchers at UCLA decided to do a study using two groups of people. Long-term meditators and a control group of non-meditators. The results were surprising.

The regular meditators had stronger connections between brain regions. Moreover, their brains hadn’t shrunk as much as is typically associated with age.

Our results suggest that long-term meditators have white-matter fibers that are either more numerous, denser or more insulated throughout the brain. We also found that the normal age-related decline is considerably reduced in active meditators… said Eileen Luders, the study’s lead author.
